Hrupp – the Ukrainian start-up

Problem

Candidates applying to IT positions experience fear of being interviewed

As a Computer Science student, I've observed the highly competitive nature of the IT field, where a candidate's success hinges on their level of preparation. The Hrupp team highlighted the challenge of job seekers lacking interviewing practice, particularly in technical interviews, leading to anxiety about the job interview process.

Goal

A service aiding candidates in interview preparation

The identified problem emphasized the need for a service focused on helping candidates prepare effectively for interviews and secure their desired positions.

Challenge

Create brand identity and landing page for the service

The objective was to create the company's brand identity and landing page, intending for the website to function as a startup concept. If successful, the plan is to expand it into a full-fledged web platform.

Competitive Analysis

Market competition showed how to deliver an exclusive experience and what mistakes to avoid

My client provided three main competitors in a foreign market that became an inspiration to create a similar new product for the Ukrainian market.

interviewing.io

InterviewBit

Interview Buddy

InterviewBit and Interview Buddy lack an exceptional UI, interviewing.io has a usable but text-heavy interface

While InterviewBit and Interview Buddy are lacking exceptional UI, interviewing.io proposes a usable interface, though is overloaded by blocks of text. After analyzing the navigation, layout, and user flow of the competing websites, as well as the products they offer, I got started working on Hrupp's landing page.

Personas

Hrupp caters to two user groups: those seeking interview preparation and those offering paid mentorship

To better empathize with users, I analyzed my own experiences and those of my friends. I maintained close communication with product owners to understand the target audience better. Using the insights gathered, I created user personas Anna and Ivan.

👩‍🎓 Anna

Age: 21 years old
Location: Kyiv, Ukraine
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

User Story

Anna, a recent Computer Science graduate, completed four years of study with excellent results at a Kyiv university. While she worked as a shop assistant during her teenage years, she lacks professional experience in the IT field.

Goal

Anna wants to launch her career as a software engineer in a credible company.

Frustrations

After graduating from the university, Anna realized that she feels insecure about her communication skills and performance during job interviews, particularly due to the lack of such practice at the university.

🧔‍♂️ Ivan

Age: 35 years old
Location: Toronto, Canada
Hometown: Kharkiv, Ukraine
Education: Master's Degree in Computer Science

User Story

Ivan, an HR specialist in a large IT company, received his education in Ukraine and later relocated to Canada, securing a job offer from a Toronto-based company.

Goal

With substantial experience as an HR manager in the IT field, Ivan seeks a paid mentor position to share his professional skills and supplement his income.

Design Constraints

Low-fidelity prototype provided by a client

The client presented a low-fidelity prototype, which served as my design constraint, requiring my final solution to be built based on it.

Design Iterations

1. Adding CTA button and more fun!

To improve the retention rate of the platform, I added a CTA button in the first screen. In addition, after the discussion with the team, I decided to use graphic illustrations instead of generic photos to make the website style less reserved and more attractive to a user.

2. About Hrupp → Who is Hrupp created for

Initially, the "What is this" section narrated the start-up's story. Following discussions with the team, we recognized that users often distrust emerging start-ups, and a generic description doesn't provide substantial information. Consequently, I suggested to transform the section into "Who is Hrupp created for," focusing on the company's user benefits and the scenarios it addresses, creating a more user-centric website.

Takeaways

Delivering design decisions relying on existing assets and data

Working on the Hrupp project I collaborated closely with the team of 4 and learned how to deliver functional designs that could be efficiently implemented into a website. If there were no time constraints, I would conduct detailed user research including interviews and surveys to make the product design more customer-facing. I learned how to base my decisions on the already existing assets and data.
